Isn't The World Supposed to Get More and More Evil?
According to the prophets of doom, the world is supposed to get more and more evil until it gets so bad that it surpasses all evil, past or future. That's a pretty bleak picture and not one that really appeals to people, even Christians. We've accepted this tradition without really thinking about it so we invite you to think about it! Up until now, what would you say is the most evil act or era in the history of the world? The Spanish Inquisition? Hitler's Germany? Sadaam's Iraq? Nero's Rome? As horrible as these are there is one evil that surpasses them all combined and raised exponentially to any level you can imagine. Some of you went right to it and others are still pondering. In all the history of the world there has never been a greater evil than the crucifixion of the sinless Redeemer of the world, and there never will be. So, if you are expecting things to get worse you are anticipating something that scripture says won't happen. In fact, things have gotten better over time and will get better yet. "How?" you say. Think about the overall world condition. Is it better than when Christ came or worse? Even a casual observer has to acknowledge that things are much better because of the influence that the gospel has had on the world. It would be a pretty weak gospel if it didn't result in an improvement in the world as the number of Christians grows. It is true that we periodically take steps backward but overall we continue to see the kingdom of God cover the earth such that even pagans call for peace. Unlike most futurist views, fulfilled prophecy confronts the world with a credible Christ whose presence with us today assures His victorious reign on earth. Not by His physical presence but by His spiritual presence in believers. We encourage you to discard the pessimism of failed or postponed fulfillment and embrace the glory of the kingdom of God. © Copyright 2003 ~ Jim Wade |
